The Henri David Halloween Ball is a tradition in Philadelphia that goes back to the 1960s. Jeweler Henri David started the Ball in 1968 as a house party. He was already into collecting and wearing wild costumes so the Ball came about since he needed an ocassion to wear his finery.  Over the years the Ball moved to bigger and bigger venues. The Scottish Rite Cathedral, The Warwick Hotel, the Bellvue Hotel and the Double Tree Hotel have all hosted the Ball. Twice it was held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. The crowds for a Saturday night Ball are well over 2000 people with a slightly lower attendance but more dedicated party goers on a Sunday or weeknight Ball. The Henri David Ball is special to us because many of the attendees are men dressed in women’s costumes. Oh my! This year the Ball happened right after Hurricane Sandy and attendance was down, but only a bit. Here are photos from the latest Henri David Halloween Ball. Enjoy!
